About Us

Meet the mother daughter duo who started Legacy Fabrics!

Elizabeth Hoffman

My grandmother, Melma Lea Higgins, taught my mother, Jane Cooper, who taught me, to sew at seven years old. My first 4-H project was sewing two bath towels together to create a swimsuit coverup. Although it was an epic failure, (who wants to wear two bath towels in the summertime!), it got me hooked! In high school, my Mom and I entered ‘The Make It Yourself with Wool’ contest together. I loved the creativity, the uniqueness, the sense of accomplishment, and a craft that lasts a lifetime, I received my degree from Kansas State University in Apparel Design and Production. Afterwards, I worked for Lord and Taylor in Chicago, and my enthusiasm spread to help and style others. After complaining about the quality of fabrics in KC going down hill for so long, my daughter Jamie and I decided to change that. I am honored and thrilled that God has answered my prayers allowing us to accomplish this goal. I truly hope you enjoy our store and the high quality fabric and service you deserve at Legacy Fabrics.

Following suit in my family’s tradition, my mom, Elizabeth, taught me how to sew when I was 7 years old. My first project was a pink pillowcase dress that my mom made me go ask the principal for permission to wear since the ribbon straps were too skinny. However mortifying that was, it did not stop me from wanting to sew more and more. I sewed in 4-H while growing up, and then furthered my education at K-State and received a degree in Apparel and Textile Design and Production. After working at Missouri Sewing Machine Co for a few years, and lamenting about how hard it was to find quality fabric, and that somebody should open a shop; my mom and I said why not us. This will be the dream of a lifetime for each of us, and we hope you love the selection of fabrics and the extensive knowledge at hand as much as we do!

Started from the basement, now we're here

My grandmother, Melma Lea Higgins, who lived in Chilhowee, Missouri, taught my mother, Jane Cooper, who taught me to sew. I followed suit by teaching my three daughters to sew as well.  Although reasons have changed, the desire, ability, challenge, and creativity of sewing is still alive and well! I also have so many memories of traveling to K.C. to visit Kaplan’s and Cy Rudnick’s. I have designed, tailored, and made so many outfits solely based on their unique, fashion forward fabrics. Thus, our name, Legacy Fabrics, is in honor of not only my grandmother and mom, but all the ladies that taught young people to sew. There is a legacy of sewing in K.C. and Jamie and I are honored to offer, once again, this wonderful, home grown fabric store.
